Mixed Signals: Ladies in the men's section

(Just a few of my favorite man items. From left to right: parkandbound.com, Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, Burberry, Chrome by Azzaro, Alkemie Jewelry, Brooks Brothers hat)

I've been on the hunt for the perfect varsity jacket. Most of what I've found has been tacky, overly cropped or made to fit a size 2. I, on the other hand, am not that tiny and was forced to move on to other options. While on a recent shopping trip with my male BFF (aka my fill-in boyfriend), I spotted the one. A non-embroidered, cozy and warm varsity jacket. There was just one problem; it was in the men's section.

Would it fit me properly? Would it be cut for big, burly man shoulders? I was skeptical, but tried it on non-the-less and was blown away. The fit was perfect.

I asked myself, "why the hell haven't I tried the men's section before?" It seemed too simple, yet how often do you find yourself, as a woman, shopping in the men's section? Probably not too often. As of lately, I've been living in my California fleece sweatshirt from American Apparel and low and behold, it's unisex. As a teenager I wore the most appropriate scent for myself; Curve...for men. And not to mention me rummaging through my boyfriends closet when hes not home to see which one of his 500 Penguin button-downs fit me the best. This whole Varsity jacket scenario seemed to just be a natural instinct that I've kept bottled up for whatever reason. Maybe because I don't want the stares while I'm trying on men's bow-ties? I'm a woman, I swear.
